What is the Google Drive download quota?
Drive gives you storage (15 GB free, or more on paid plans), but Google also limits how many times a single shared file can be downloaded in a short period. When a public link goes viral — big mod packs, patch notes, fan translations — Google temporarily blocks new downloads on that file to protect bandwidth.
This is not a ban on your Google account. It is a temporary cap on one shared item. The built-in workaround for people with access: create your own copy inside your Drive.
Official fix: Make a copy → download the copy
When Drive copies a file into your account, that copy is treated as a separate file with its own quota. You can download the copy even when the original shared link is blocked.
Step 1 — Sign in and open the file
- Go to drive.google.com and sign in with the Google account that has access.
- Open the shared link or find the file in Shared with me.
- If you see the quota message, stay signed in — do not use incognito without access.
Step 2 — Make a copy
- Desktop: Right-click the file → Make a copy.
- Mobile app: Tap ⋮ (menu) → Make a copy.
- Mobile browser: Open the file → menu → Make a copy if available.
Drive saves the copy to My Drive. The copy uses your storage — check you have enough free space for large archives.
Step 3 — Download the copy
- Find the new copy in My Drive (often named "Copy of …").
- Right-click → Download (or Download on mobile).
- After the download finishes, delete the copy if you only needed it once — that frees storage.
Step 4 — For folders (optional)
Folders work similarly: right-click the folder → Make a copy. Google duplicates the structure into your Drive, then download individual large files or use Google Drive for desktop to sync the copy locally.
When "Make a copy" does not work
- Copying disabled — the owner blocked download/copy. Ask them to enable viewers can copy or re-upload to a fresh link.
- Wait 24 hours — per-file quotas often reset after a day.
- Not enough storage — free space in My Drive must fit the full file size.
- Ask for an official mirror — publisher CDN, Steam, Nexus Mods, or another cloud the owner controls.
Tips for game files & large archives
- Check free space first — a 30 GB pack needs 30 GB free to copy.
- Prefer official sources — Steam Workshop, publisher sites, and store clients avoid quota drama entirely.
- Zip before sharing — if you share files, one zip often downloads more reliably than loose folders.
- Google Drive for desktop — sync large copies instead of browser download if your connection drops.
